History
Town Moor Bench Runners originated during the COVID-19 pandemic. The group was set up by runners who had previously attended the Gosforth SRG social runs held by the Up & Running shop on Gosforth High Street.
The Gosforth branch of Up & Running sadly did not return post-pandemic, so the Town Moor Bench Runners picked up where the shop left off; our three weekly social runs are held at the same times as the old Gosforth SRG runs.
Social runs could be patchy in the early days, as the group were often hampered by pandemic rules such as the ‘rule of six’ and there were times when running together with friends was not possible at all. During this period, the name ‘Town Moor Bench Runners’ was chosen, following some discussion, due to the group’s regular meeting point (the bench on the corner of Elmfield Road and Gosforth High Street) and regular routes (centred on the Town Moor).
Orange was chosen as the club colour, as it is easy to spot and helps us to recognise each other at events. Later on, blue was chosen as the colour for our Friday runs, following an instance of everyone showing up in blue by coincidence. Race finisher t-shirts are often blue and our Friday runs give us a good opportunity to wear them all!
Over the years, the group has grown to a collective of around 50 regular runners. The ethos and emphasis of Town Moor Bench Runners remains the social side of running, enjoying easy runs together while supporting each other in our training and running progress.
The group’s motto is Sentit Expecto Velocitates, corresponding with the what3words address of our usual meeting point.
